Before I had embarked on my first bombing run, i told myself one thing: just don’t fuck up. Needless to say, this is easier said than done. I’d like to sit back and tell you that everything went spectacularly, and that many kills were shared among my fleetmates, but nothing could be further than the truth.
Some intel had come through that there were some hostile operations a few jumps over in null space. A fleet was forming up to meet them, and one of our FCs said, “let’s get a group of bombers together.”
I’ve had a Hound fitted and ready to go in my hangar for over a month. The only other time I had taken a bomber out ended in disaster when I flew one solo to mark some tactical locations. That one met its fate at the hand of an interdictor I jumped in on. I made it clear to my FC, this will be my first proper bombing run.
“No problem,” he said. “We’ll go over some basics on the way over.”
Needless to say, this didn’t happen.
I don’t place fault on my FC. He was busy getting intel about the enemy and maneuvering our fleet. In addition, we were sharing comms with the destroyer/frigate wing that we were going out with.
The one thing I learned really quick: as soon as you are warped off any gate, cloak up. This was going pretty well through a few systems until we landed a bit off a gate, and I heard my FC yell, “Panic, cloak up!”
Had I turned off my cloaking device accidentally? Did a nearby object de-cloak me? I’ll never know the answer to those questions, because, true to my name, I panicked. In a mad scramble to cloak back up, I then did the unthinkable. I hit the wrong module and launched a bomb instead.
I think my FC nearly had a heart attack. I face-palmed, and all I could see through my fingers was my bomb leaving my ship, and flying right toward the gate, where a few of my corp mates were sitting. Luckily, no one was severely hurt. I told myself that would be the end of my fuckups, and it was.
However, the whole thing was plagued by people randomly uncloaking. The pinnacle moment occurred when we were trying to stay stealthy around a Cerberus, but someone had uncloaked us. We quickly warped off to a safe, where the FC yelled at the offender to cloak up. No response. We eventually booted him from fleet, and left him there. We later found out that he “went AFK to get something to eat.”
In the end, we didn’t get any kills, and were only able to sit back from afar and watch the frig & dessie wing get bombed.
