The first rule of New Eden: if it looks to good to be true, it’s a scam. I thought I had seen most scams. At the very least, I thought I had heard of all of them. The ingenuity of the scam artists never ceases to amaze me, though.
For a little while now, I’ve been dabbling in Somer Blink. For those that don’t know, Blink is an ISK gambling operation in which one can win billions, or lose billions. For the most part, players can buy a one-in-eight chance on winning a fancy ship, faction module, or a multitude of other prizes. In addition, they run Promo Blinks, which are generally free bets (you only pay in tokens, which you accumulate through regular betting). The Promo Blinks feature high-end items, and the odds are often 299-1, but the big catch is that you can only play one ticket.
Needless to say, there are a lot of gamblers that have played thousands of Promos and have never won one. Maybe I shit four-leaf clovers, or something, because I’ve played under 50 and I’ve won three.
My latest two have some recently. The first was a PLEX, which was great, because who doesn’t like PLEX? The great thing about Somer Blink is that they deliver everything right to Jita 4-4. I promptly had my PLEX delivered to Jita, and decided to cash it in, since PLEX prices are through the roof right now.
The real story here begins with my latest Promo win. During a slow time, I was conversing with some comrades over voice comms, and we were talking about Blink. I was mostly talking about how lucky I was. And then I won another Promo.
“Oh my god I won that Machariel!”
For a moment, I felt like I was walking on water. Free battleship? Sure, I’ll take that. Like the PLEX before, I quickly made arrangements to have my Machariel delivered to Jita. This time, I wasn’t going to take the ISK, either. My plan is to fly that thing into a blaze of glory.
The next day, the alert came up: you have 2 new contracts assigned to you. I opened up my contracts page, and saw two contracts, both for a Machariel. My first inclination was that I had won two Machariels, because Somer Blink does that stuff sometimes. They occasionally turn it up to eleven and start giving away stuff like Oprah.
“Oh, you like winning battleships? Fuck, have another one!”
Like I said, my first thought, probably like hundreds of other players, was that I hit the jackpot. Then I regained my senses, and remembered that this is New Eden. Nowhere on Somer’s site had it said that I won double. They, like Oprah, don’t give away anything extra unless there’s an audience to see it.
I scanned the two contracts. The first looked legit. One Machariel to me from Somer Blink. The other was from another person stating they would pay me zero ISK in return for one Machariel.
I couldn’t help but to laugh at the cleverness of it. Someone out there is actually scanning the list of winners on Blink and trying to contract them out of their prizes. Maybe this one is old as Blink itself, but I had never seen it before. I wondered how many helpless saps go and click “Agree” on that contract while their head is still in cloud nine. I respected the shrewdness.
Hell, I might even try it myself.
